Folk Around And Find Out

Good Folk FAAFO.jpg de Penny Reid (2022)

Résumé : He needs to get her out of his system. Just once...

Hank Weller doesn’t help people. He leaves that do-gooder nonsense to his best friend, Beau Winston. Hank does what he wants, when he wants, with whomever he wants—and Hank does not want to hire Charlotte Mitchell to be an exotic dancer at his club, The Pink Pony. Sure, he can’t help noticing the dips and curves of her, how shrewd, smart, and funny she is, the fire in her hazel eyes. He's always noticed. She’d probably draw a crowd and entice the regulars. But after Charlotte's messy, public divorce made Hank’s club out to be the culprit—and made her the single mother of four kids—he doesn’t need or want any additional bad press courtesy of Charlotte Mitchell. Or the distraction. Unfortunately for him, the town’s prettiest charity case doesn’t seem to understand the meaning of the words nope, no, and never.

Charlotte Mitchell doesn’t much like Hank Weller. Once upon a time, she used to. Years ago, she liked him a whole heckofalot despite other folks in town labeling him as “eccentric” and “nonconformist,” which were polite southern alternatives to "filthy rich" and "self-centered douchebag." Her opinion of him changed dramatically after he volunteered to be her date to junior prom and then promptly stood her up. They haven't so much as acknowledged each other in over a decade. But a sudden family emergency means Charlotte needs access to Hank’s club ASAP. Unfortunately for her, the narcissistic fancy-pants doesn’t seem to understand the meaning of the words help, generosity, and compassion.

But he’s about to find himself schooled. Charlotte is going to teach Hank a lesson once and for all about basic human decency, whether he likes it or not.

Spoiler alert. . . he likes it. ;-)

****************************

After meeting Hank in her previous books, Penny Reid finally offers us his story, and what a joy to finally see this character and his open heart. Hank and Charlotte couldn't be more different from each other, and yet when they find each other it's obvious, but their story isn't a done deal.

It is a family emergency that pushes Charlotte to try to get hired at the Pink Pony, her cousin has disappeared and she might have been a dancer there. Not wanting to spread words about this story, Charlotte lies to Hank about the real reasons why she wants to work for him. For his part, Hank wants nothing to do with Charlotte, the whole town is angry with him as if he were personally responsible for Charlotte's divorce, the escape of the husband and the fact that she raises her 4 children alone.

Despite being grumpy, Hank can't leave her stranded and hires her as an accountant for the Pink Pony (to the great relief of Charlotte who couldn't see dancing ^^) and it's the beginning of the end, Hank tries to resist Charlotte, but it doesn't really work, nor for Charlotte either.

Then Hank meets Charlotte's chilren and he is completely ruined. He who prefers his social circle to be limited to Beau (and a few other Winstons from time to time), will bond very strongly with 2 of the children. The discussions he has with them and the way he will immediately accept them as they are is really cool *_*

Finally, I think what also touched me a lot was the bond of friendship between Beau and Hank, they also both have strong emotional scenes

Ten Trends to Seduce your Bestfriend

FRONT Ten Trends 20220205 FINAL fixed.jpg de Penny Reid (2022)

Résumé : Winnifred Gobaldi and Byron Visser are not best friends.

Yes, they’ve known each other for years, but they’re not even friendly. Winnie considers them more like casual, distant acquaintances who find each other barely tolerable, especially when he's being condescending (which is all the time).

The truth is, they have nothing in common. She’s a public school science teacher with stars in her eyes, and he’s a pretentious, joyless double PhD turned world-famous bestselling fiction author. She loves sharing her passion for promulgating women in STEM careers and building community via social media, and he eschews all socialization, virtual or otherwise. She’s looking for a side hustle to help pay down a mountain of student debt, and his financial portfolio is the stuff of fiduciary wet dreams. So why are they faking a #bestfriend relationship for millions of online spectators?

When a simple case of tit-for-tat trends between nonfriends leads to a wholly unexpected kind of pretend, nothing is simple. Sometimes, it takes a public audience to reveal the truth of private feelings, and rarely—very rarely—you should believe what you see online.

penny reid, ten trends to seduce your bestfriend

In all objectivity, I believe this new Penny Reid book enters directly into my top 3 of my favorites novels from her. It's 400 pages and it's a page turner when reading. The romance is a slow burn and we enjoy every moment, every step forward, every little detail that makes us squeal in delight . Until the end we go through all the emotions, because her characters go through all the emotions #allthefeels .

Winnie teaches science in a public school, she loves her job and gives all for her students. Besides that, she shares her passion for science by creating videos, explaining everyday scientific notions and showing that this field is not only for men. An great professional opportunity presents itself to her : to become a community manager to highlight women in science, however to obtain an interview, she must show that her work on social networks is followed at a higher level. With her best friend Amelia, they decide to set up a series of challenges on Tik Tok, on the theme of friendship (and more if affinity...) by asking one of their friends for help.

Unfortunately, the friend is pretty bad for these challenges and is replaced at short notice by Byron. He and Winnie have known each other since college, but he's more Amelia's friend than her. There's something about Byron that has always kept her at bay : his anti-social, half bear-half grumpy tendencies, and his unfiltered way of speaking what he thinks. His status as a successful author makes him pass a pretentious a****.

By mistake, the first video filmed is put online, and it's a crazy success ! Byron is ok to continue filming challenges with Winnie under certain conditions. Everything seems to be quite clear and precise, but obviously the more Winnie will spend time with Byron the more she knows him (she knows almost nothing about him at the beginning), the more she changes her mind about him and discover the tender heart that hides underneath .

Winnie and Byron are really adorable together, they are the example of "opposites attract": despite a difficult childhood and an obvious lack of self-confidence, Winnie is an enthusiastic young woman who loves people, in real life, via social networks, she easily initiates conversations ; Byron has always perceived the world in a different way, he avoids social interactions preferring fictional characters from his novels, he has very few friends and has found something special in Winnie...

This novel is about two young people who don't have a lot of experience, about first impressions that aren't necessarily right, and the need to say what you think in a two-person relationship, to trust that the other will listen without judging. So yes it's not easy, they won't get there straightaway, but by taking each one a step towards the other, they will find themselves in the middle .

The dialogues are accurate, the characters in depth (I can't reveal everything otherwise there won't be any more fun to read ^^), even the secondary characters take shape. I didn't want to let it go while reading and at the same time I didn't want to finish it too quickly, to stay as long as possible with Winnie and Byron.

I invite you to read the author's note before starting, it could shed some light on the narrative choices : in particular the addition of chapters from Byron's point of view, something that was not planned at the start and which add so much more to the character, if we hadn't been in his head, it would have been a great loss.

Beard in Hiding

WB-4.5.jpg de Penny Reid (2021)

Résumé : Diane Donner—recently divorced pillar of polite society—is craving danger. She’s tired of playing it safe and she knows just the sexy criminal motorcycle man to proposition for a good time. Problem is, she doesn’t actually know his name.

Jason “Repo” Doe never takes risks. So when the queen of local commerce walks into his club, looking to get risky and frisky, Jason knows the smartest thing to do is save himself a headache while saving the new divorcee from her worst impulses.
But then one thing leads to another, and the memory of just-one-night doesn’t feel like enough.

Theirs is a story with no future, because how can a dangerous criminal win (and keep) a queen?

penny reid,beard in hiding

This book must be read if you've read Marriage & Murder and the Winston Brothers from Book 5 before, otherwise you won't understand half of the events. This tome lifts the veil on what happened to Diane over the year before she disappeared to escape the FBI, being the main suspect in the murder of her ex-husband... Well I assure you, she is totally innocent, but the circumstances of the drama are not the best.

And so, after her divorce and at the same time as she reunites with her daughter, Diane decides to take on personal challenges to get her life back in hand. One of those challenges is having a one night stand with a stranger. On Christmas Eve, Diane decides to go find the stranger she was attracted to : Repo.

Obviously, what should have been a night without attachment and without feelings, will be otherwise. Diane and Repo will take their time to come back to each other, but an unprecedented event will seal them together. Story aside, the romance between these 40 something is very pleasant to read, it's about second chance at love, new start in life, self-confidence. I hope we hear from them ^^.
