So why are they faking a #bestfriend relationship for millions of online spectators?

When a simple case of tit-for-tat trends between nonfriends leads to a wholly unexpected kind of pretend, nothing is simple. Sometimes, it takes a public audience to reveal the truth of private feelings, and rarely—very rarely—you should believe what you see online.


En tout objectivité, je crois ce nouveau livre de Penny Reid entre direct dans le top 3 de mes préférés d'elle. Il fait 400 pages et on ne les voit pas du tout passer à la lecture. La romance est un slow burn et on profite de chaque instant, de chaque avancée, de tous les petits détails qui nous font couiner ♥ . Jusqu'à la fin on passe par toutes les émotions, car ses personnages passent par toutes les émotions #allthefeels .

Winnie enseigne les sciences dans une école publique, elle adore son job et se donne à fond pour ses élèves. A côté de cela, elle partage sa passion des sciences en créant des vidéos, expliquant des notions scientifiques de tous les jours et montrant par la même occasion que ce domaine n'est pas que masculin. Une opportunité professionnelle idéale se présente à elle : devenir une community manager pour mettre en avant les femmes dans les sciences, cependant pour obtenir un entretien, elle doit montrer que son travail sur les réseaux sociaux est suivi à un niveau plus important. Avec sa meilleure amie Amélia, elles décident de mettre en place une série de challenges sur Tik Tok, sur la thématique de l'amitié (et plus si affinité...) en demandant de l'aide à l'un de leur ami.

Malheureusement, l'ami est assez nul pour ces challenges et est remplacé au pied levé par Byron. Winnie et lui se connaissent depuis le collège, mais c'est plus l'ami d'Amélia que le sien. Il a quelque chose chez Byron qui l'a toujours tenue à distance : ses tendances antisociales, mi-ours mi-grognon, et sa façon de parler sans filtre en disant vraiment ce qu'il pense. Son statut d'auteur à succès le fait passer un c**** prétentieux.

Coup du destin, la première vidéo filmée est mise en ligne pas erreur c'est un un succès dingue ! Byron est ok pour continuer à filmer des challenges avec Winnie sous certaines conditions. Tout semble est assez clair et précis, mais évidemment plus Winnie va passer du temps avec Byron et plus elle va le connaitre (elle sait quasiment rien de lui au début) changer d'avis à son sujet et découvrir le coeur tendre qui se cache dessous ♥.

Winnie et Byron sont vraiment adorables ensemble, ils sont l'exemple mais des "opposés s'attirent" : malgré une enfance difficile et un manque évidemment de confiance en elle, Winnie est une jeune femme enthousiaste et qui aime les gens, en vrai et via les réseaux sociaux, elle engage facilement les conversations ; Byron a toujours perçu le monde de façon différente, il fuit les interactions sociales préférant les personnages fictifs de ses romans, il a très peu d'amis et a trouvé quelque chose de spécial chez Winnie...

Ce roman parle de deux jeunes qui n'ont pas beaucoup d'expérience, des premières impressions qui ne sont pas forcément justes, et de la nécessité de dire ce qu'on pense dans une relation à deux, de faire confiance que l'autre écoutera sans juger. Alors oui c'est pas facile, on y arrive pas du premier coup, mais en faisant chacun un pas vers l'autre, on se retrouvera bien au milieu ♥

Les dialogues sont justes, les personnages en profondeur (je peux pas tout dévoiler sinon il n'y aura plus de plaisir de lire ^^), même les personnages secondaires prennent corps. Je n'avais pas envie de le lâcher en lisant et en même temps je ne voulais pas le finir trop vite, pour rester le plus longtemps possible avec Winnie et Byron.

Je vous invite à lire la note de l'auteur avant de commencer, ça pourrait donner un certain éclairage sur les choix narratif : notamment l'ajout de chapitres du point de vue de Byron, chose qui n'était pas prévu au départ et qui fait la différence sur le personnage, si on avait pas été dans sa tête, cela aurait une grande perte.

In all objectivity, I believe this new Penny Reid book enters directly into my top 3 of my favorites novels from her. It's 400 pages and it's a page turner when reading. The romance is a slow burn and we enjoy every moment, every step forward, every little detail that makes us squeal in delight ♥ . Until the end we go through all the emotions, because her characters go through all the emotions #allthefeels .

Winnie teaches science in a public school, she loves her job and gives all for her students. Besides that, she shares her passion for science by creating videos, explaining everyday scientific notions and showing that this field is not only for men. An great professional opportunity presents itself to her : to become a community manager to highlight women in science, however to obtain an interview, she must show that her work on social networks is followed at a higher level. With her best friend Amelia, they decide to set up a series of challenges on Tik Tok, on the theme of friendship (and more if affinity...) by asking one of their friends for help.

Unfortunately, the friend is pretty bad for these challenges and is replaced at short notice by Byron. He and Winnie have known each other since college, but he's more Amelia's friend than her. There's something about Byron that has always kept her at bay : his anti-social, half bear-half grumpy tendencies, and his unfiltered way of speaking what he thinks. His status as a successful author makes him pass a pretentious a****.

By mistake, the first video filmed is put online, and it's a crazy success ! Byron is ok to continue filming challenges with Winnie under certain conditions. Everything seems to be quite clear and precise, but obviously the more Winnie will spend time with Byron the more she knows him (she knows almost nothing about him at the beginning), the more she changes her mind about him and discover the tender heart that hides underneath ♥.

Winnie and Byron are really adorable together, they are the example of "opposites attract": despite a difficult childhood and an obvious lack of self-confidence, Winnie is an enthusiastic young woman who loves people, in real life, via social networks, she easily initiates conversations ; Byron has always perceived the world in a different way, he avoids social interactions preferring fictional characters from his novels, he has very few friends and has found something special in Winnie...

This novel is about two young people who don't have a lot of experience, about first impressions that aren't necessarily right, and the need to say what you think in a two-person relationship, to trust that the other will listen without judging. So yes it's not easy, they won't get there straightaway, but by taking each one a step towards the other, they will find themselves in the middle ♥.

The dialogues are accurate, the characters in depth (I can't reveal everything otherwise there won't be any more fun to read ^^), even the secondary characters take shape. I didn't want to let it go while reading and at the same time I didn't want to finish it too quickly, to stay as long as possible with Winnie and Byron.

I invite you to read the author's note before starting, it could shed some light on the narrative choices : in particular the addition of chapters from Byron's point of view, something that was not planned at the start and which add so much more to the character, if we hadn't been in his head, it would have been a great loss.
